Character fails to move when using the New Input System

It would be great if we could narrow the project down to what is essential. I’ve created a demo project using the Player Input component, and it’s working as expected. I will proceed with closing the JIRA.

Reproduction steps:
1. Open the attached project "ReproProj"
2. Open the “/Assets/The Game.unity” Scene
3. Enter the Play Mode
4. Try moving the character

Expected result: Character moves
Actual result: Character does not move

Reproducible with: 1.10.0 (6000.0.19f1), 1.17.0 (6000.0.63f1, 6000.2.14f1, 6000.3.0f1, 6000.4.0a5, 6000.5.0a2)

Reproducible on:
Play Mode
Windows Standalone Player

Testing environment: Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2
Not reproducible on: No other environment tested

Notes:

Character controller script is “/Assets/Scripts/FPSController.cs“
Action map is “/Assets/Player Controls.cs“
Player input is attached to Player GameObject
No Errors are present
